Peacefully at Southlake Regional Health Centre on Saturday, January 7, 2023. Allan McDermott, age 93 years, beloved husband of Carol McDermott. Dear father of Ann (Garth Nash) and Alison (Duncan Bailey). Loving grandfather of Ainsley, Braeden, Robin and Glynn. Dear brother of the late Barbara Perkins. He will be sadly missed by several cousins and nephews.

Allan grew up in Sutton, Ontario where he spent many happy hours outdoors fishing, collecting bird eggs, keeping rabbits and making friendships that would last a lifetime. He moved to Toronto as a teenager and went on to a distinguished career in education including many years as a department head at Thornhill Secondary School, serving on the executive of the Ontario Technical Directors Association, as technical education consultant for York Region where he was a passionate advocate for technical education, and later as a teacher at the Faculty of Education at the University of Toronto. He and Carol returned to Georgina in retirement, where he became an active member of St. George's Anglican Church, the Pefferlaw Lion's Club, the Virginia Beach Boulevard Association, the Sutton Curling Club and the South Lake Simcoe Naturalist Club, among others. He enjoyed birding, gardening, keeping chickens and fishing on Lake Simcoe, and loved his adopted dogs, most recently Lucy. Allan always had time to help a friend, or to enjoy a good chat, especially about politics or history or antique cars or planes. He was a devoted husband and loving father who will be missed for his generosity, his sense of humour and big heart.

Friends may call at the Forrest and Taylor Funeral Home, Sutton on Friday, January 13, 2023 from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 pm. Funeral Service at St. James Anglican Church 31 River Street, Sutton, on Saturday, January 14, 2023 at 11 a.m. Donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society are appreciated by the family.
