David Thomas Thorburn
January 27, 1928 - April 23, 2024
David Thomas Thorburn, age 96, died on April 23, 2024, after a short respiratory illness at Southlake Regional Health Centre. David is predeceased by his father, John Thorburn and John's wives, Alice (nee Cardwell) and Kathleen (nee McKeever). He is survived by his sister, Mary Margaret Thorburn, many cousins across Canada and his newly found cousins in Scotland who he got to "meet" thanks to the internet.
David was born in Montreal and began his career at the age of 17 with Northern Electric. He was promoted and moved to Ottawa to take on his next position with Bell Northern Research. He was particularly proud of the fact that he was an integral part of installing the first microwave towers across northern Ontario. He concluded his career as a supervisor with NORTEL. Upon his early retirement he took pride in the work that he did with the Bell Pioneers installing safety systems for seniors in their homes that were directly connected to emergency respondents. He moved to Keswick to be closer to his sister in 1995. Throughout his life his passion for planes was always evident. When he moved to Keswick, he was thrilled to find the Keswick Model Airplane Club (K.M.A.C.). He was an active member for many years. One of his favourite planes was his "Gentle Lady", a real nod to his kind and generous spirit.
Friends are invited to meet at Forrest & Taylor Funeral Home for a Memorial Visitation on Sunday, May 5, 2024, from 2-5 to reminisce, support each other and just chat about a kind and gentle man and a life well lived. David will be sorely missed by his family, friends, and those whose lives he had the opportunity to touch. Special thanks go to his caring family at Cedarvale Lodge, the amazingly compassionate nurses on the palliative ward and his new special friend Maria!
As David was a practical no nonsense kind of man, in lieu of flowers, contributions to Hospice Georgina, P.O. Box 721 Sutton, ON L0E 1R0, would be greatly appreciated (www.hospicegeorgina.com). Memorial condolences may be made at www.forrestandtaylor.com
