Hans (John) Gregor Volkenstein, a longtime Georgina resident, passed away peacefully on October 22, 2024, at the age of 89. Born on August 16, 1935, in Frankfurt, Germany, John immigrated to Canada in 1956, arriving in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He soon made Toronto his home. After brief periods in California and Florida, he settled in Georgina, where he would spend the majority of his life.
A man of remarkable entrepreneurial spirit and community involvement, John pursued diverse ventures throughout his life. He was a self-made entrepreneur, succeeding in the print shop business, gas station and convenience store operations, and real estate. His true passion, however, lay in hospitality. He owned and operated several iconic restaurants in the Georgina area, including Mansion House, The Pines of Georgina, and the Orchard Beach Restaurant. His entrepreneurial endeavors extended beyond Canada, with businesses in the United States as well.
John is survived by his children, Debby Pirso (Tom Pirso) and John Volkenstein (Betty Volkenstein). His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Mitch Pirso (Brittney Pirso) and Dayna Pirso (Alexander Jones), and his great-grandchildren, Caleb and Nolan Pirso.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Katharina Volkenstein (nee Dix), who passed away in 1992.
John will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His life was a testament to hard work, dedication, and a love for family and community.
