With sadness, we announce the passing of Norman Charles Helmkay on April 3, 2024 at 94 years strong. A proud and loving husband, father, and grandfather, Norman enjoyed a long career with IBM, yet still retired at the young age of 56! Norm was passionate about driving, antique cars, travel, motorhomes, and, in particular, his Corvair Ultravan. He was Past President (1971) of the Historical Auto Society of Canada, Director of the Willys Overland Knight Registry, Historian, Tech Advisor, and Archivist for the Ultravan Motor Coach Club, and staff writer for the Canadian Old Autos newspaper. Norm received a commission as a Pilot Officer with the Royal Canadian Air Force (1954) and the family agrees it’s a toss up which he liked to talk about more - planes or automobiles!
Norm enjoyed the love of his wife of 71 years, Marion (Sims) Helmkay, his son Karl Helmkay (predeceased), his son Grant Helmkay, and daughter Lauren Helmkay and partner Nick Skevington. He would light up at the mention of his grandson, Trevor Helmkay and fiancé Kristiane Reyles, and his granddaughter, Alexandra (Andie) Sturgess.
A service for Norm will be held at St. George’s Church, 408 Hedge Road, Georgina on May 18, 2024 at 1:30 p.m. followed by a reception and remembrance at Norm and Marion’s home, (address to be announced at service or contact email below) in Sutton, Ontario. Please come to help us celebrate a life well lived and loved.
In lieu of flowers, donations to The Alzheimer Society of Canada would be appreciated https://alzheimer.ca/
